The Christian Spirit

This poem came out of nowhere. Started while working on another poem. I really like it. It’s a departure for me – non-rhyming, relying on the meter and flow. But again – it is content that matters to me: the message.

The christian spirit should be marked by freedom.

This is a person who breathes in deeply,

Rapt with the wonder of wondrous creation.

Unshackled by the weight of messy past,

Strong in the knowledge that they are redeemed;

Able to embrace the best of everything,

Not needing to cling to outmoded forms.

Then others will take note…

The christian spirit should be marked by sheer joy.

This is a person whose face is radiant;

Aglow from the warmth of knowing he’s loved;

Loved by the One who draws all to Himself.

Not giddy laughter but a constant smile;

Born of a gift accepted and unwrapped:

Life with others in God, in fulness forever.

Then others will take note…

The christian spirit should be marked by deep peace.

This is a person who exudes calmness,

Sourced not from a false avoidance of life,

But from God’s clear promise to us all:

Not even death can tear you from Me.

Sure in the knowledge that all comes together,

Even the bad will bend to His purpose.

Then others will take note…

The christian spirit should be marked by pure love.

This is a person who first loves himself,

Who treasures and respects his God-given worth,

Who then commits to both God and neighbour,

Doing to others as he would be done by.

He doesn’t ignore wounds given and taken,

But wills the best for all men regardless.

Then others will take note…

The christian spirit should be marked by true praise.

This is a person who knows who he is,

Who he belongs to and where he is going,

The priceless dignity of his very being,

The true fulfilment of his existence:

To praise with all his heart and soul,

The wonderful Creator of all that is.

Then others will take note…

The christian spirit should be marked by mistakes.

This is a person who acts with good heart,

Knowing that he’s never infallible,

And there will be times when he fails:

Misunderstandings, hurts, failures.

But better to act than do nothing at all,

Clothed in humility and needful of mercy.

Then others will take note…

The christian spirit should be bound in Jesus.

This is a person who’s taken the time,

To wait on his Lord, acknowledging that,

‘Lord’ means Lord, a life changing stance.

Finding true freedom and fulfilment,

In profound submission to the divine,

A yoke that is easy, a burden light.

Then others will see God…
