Senryus
Senryus are a traditional short verse from Japan, using seventeen syllables in a five, seven, five formation. As such they force the writer to be very succinct. They are similar to the more well known Haiku, but whereas the Haiku spirit is pastoral and calming, the Senryu is more moralistic and cutting. I like to use them for expressing brief, pithy, impactful statements, usually on serious topical themes such as the present state of church life. |
Speak infallibly
And someone else might even
Hear infallibly
At our journey's end
We have neither scripture nor
Church - only Jesus
The humanists' cry:
There is nothing when you die!
Will we be laughing?
Dissent in the Church?
Not ordained by God! What next...
Open government?
Woman's right to choose!
It sounds so good - somewhat like:
Buy now, pay later...
In order to kill,
A man only needs to call
His brother: stranger
The Church exists to
Build the Kingdom. As such it
Too will pass away
Fundamentalists
Are so sure of their God, they
Don't listen to Him
Nothing in life is
Free except that which is the
Most precious - God's love
The Catholic Church
Should be God's light to the world.
Who controls the switch?
To read the Bible
Literally is like dis-
mantling Rubik's cube
Prayer mechanics:
Osmosis - God from within,
Prayer changes men
Salvation: finding
Out what God was up to when
He created me
Our hearts yearn for God
Like furled flowers beneath the
Forest canopy
Has hell been consigned
To limbo, and has limbo
In fact gone to hell?
In my prayer life,
Lord God, I am a failure.
Does that make You one?
"Move on from the past!"
Usually said by those who
Have known advantage
"No surrender!" The
Louder the shout, the deeper
The sense of self-doubt
"To live in the now
Is to lose the fear of death."
And begin to breathe
If there is no right,
Then there is no hope, and no
Justice for the least
It's convenient
Not to know the will of God,
Lest we need to change
An arrogant man
Can find in religion the
Perfect loud speaker
Daily we pray words,
Words we do not understand,
And even less mean
Frustration occurs
When we don't get that which we've
Decided we need
Hesitation - the
Humble man's prerequisite
For Christ-like witness
The treasure of faith
Has a price, and that price is
Called discipleship
Plant trees of grace well
Before the storms of life crash
In upon your soul
The journey inwards
Is not a physical trek:
No sick notes allowed
Prayer is soul trek:
Warp factor God! Beam me in,
To boldly go where...
The print of God is
To be found by exploring
The soil of your soul
Every man can
Meet God, if he but pause and
Listen to his heart
Be still enough to
Hear your soul, and you will find
God singing in it
Men are useless at
Religion, and religion's
Useless at women
Who is the 'other'?
Not me, but another me,
Beloved of God
Christian faith is fact
In waiting: not established
But resonating
Is a loving God
Wish fulfilment for brittle
Folk, or just the truth?
His yoke is easy;
Why shackle ourselves to a
Lesser paymaster?
In it's confident
Certainty, religion is
Often arrogant
Where is certainty?
In scripture? In Church teaching?
Come Holy Spirit!
Hindsight - the dodgy
Ability to condemn
Ourselves for learning
All justice should be
Rehabilitative. If
Not, then it's vengeance
He who lives by the
Letter of the law, will see
The law pass away
In order to love,
A man only needs to call
The stranger: brother
Hunger makes a thief
Of a good man. Plenty makes
The thief appear good
Fundamentalists:
Firm believers in a god
Forged by their anger
Capitalism:
How to ensure that the poor
Are with us always
Truth will set you free.
Catholics like to gift wrap
Truth with tradition
The one who is right
Is either a fraud or the
Most humble of men
Bible - two levels:
As personal love letter;
As Church discernment
Christian witness:
God at our fingertips or
The other way round?
You are immortal;
With an endless succession
Of present moments
"Let the strong get on!"
The reality is: the
Least go to the wall
Casting God in our
Own mold, we solidify
Him through prejudice
"Don't forget the past!"
Usually said by those who
Have known injustice
Human hearts hunger
For unending bliss. Only
God can provide this
in memory of a great teacher - Fr Eric Doyle OFM
The heart that knows right,
Must ever beat humbly, else
It pumps arrogance
Healing begins with
The realisation that
Jesus shares our wounds
God-fearing isn't
Fear of God, but to walk in
A sacred manner
Temptation is a
Place where we book ourselves in
Without too much thought
There are two types of
Folk: those who don't know God, and
Those who think they do
Evil - a spirit
Distilled by continuous
Choices against good
Many atheists
Are angry with God. For some
It seems personal
Modern life keeps us
On the outside of ourselves:
Shallowness is rife...
A paralysed man
Can walkabout with Jesus:
Come, see where I live!
Discover the ground
Of your being and you will
Enter God's presence
The last wilderness
To be explored is the heart:
Each heart, a new land
In silence one can
Hear what matters. What matters?
That would be telling!
Each human heart is
An auditorium where
God sings His love songs
The avenue that
Leads away from chaos is
Called 'mutual respect'
It's harder for a
Rich church to serve the Kingdom
Than for a camel...
Predestination?
Our inability to
Understand God's time
Like a summer storm,
Suffering came and went, and
We were the stronger
If you really want
To change the world, begin and
End with your own heart
